The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
